Depression: A Singapore label that doesn’t live up to its name

Singapore label Depression is holding a party for its new store in Cathay Cineleisure over the weekend.

But because I’ll mostly be blogging about the event next week, I figured it a must to introduce people to the clothes this week.

Luckily for us, this is one label that doesn’t live up to its name…thank goodness! Depression is anything but. Instead, this Singaporean brand pushes out eye-catching and sometimes visually challenging clothes with ease.

The androgynous clothes with a razor sharp edge are the brainchild of Kenny and Andrew who turned their feeling of dissatisfaction (hence the name: depression) into wearable art.

And it is art indeed! Their current collection – the intricate drapery, asymmetrical cuts and interplays between black and white – is certainly an attention seekers dream.

But even when they delve into the playful (as they do with their very stylish and colourful, almost diorama-esque t-shirts) they manage to do so with a real visual flair.

Depression has both menswear and womenswear collections. Although it’s hard to tell the difference at first glance which adds to the appeal and non-gender defined identity of the label. There is a difference though, as the women’s cuts tend to be much sharper – with triangular shaped t-shirts a standout.

And the shoes…the shoes! Although not my usually more feminine style, the footwear in Depression’s latest collection is dripping with originality. Backless, strappy Oxford-style shoes anyone? I’m tempted to try!

Anyway, enough from me! I’ll leave the pictures (all from their latest collection Birth Defects) do the talking. I’ll be there over the weekend with a credit card in hand and see if I can emerge from Depression a changed person ;-)

I think that's the look I'll go for, shoes and all :-) What do you say?
